Lasers & Love: Why EDM Belongs on the Lot

The Lot Department · Sep 18, 2026

Bass drops and bluegrass picks have more in common than you think.

Walk the lot at a festival and you'll hear a fiddle tune on one side and a wobbling bassline on the other. Some folks think those are two different tribes. We think they're cousins.

Livetronica built the bridge

Long before electronic music filled stadiums, bands like the Disco Biscuits, STS9 and Lotus were mixing live instruments with dance beats and improvisation. They played jam-band rooms to jam-band crowds, and those crowds danced all night. Pretty Lights took it further, blending soul samples and live production into shows that felt like a family gathering with a massive sound system.

Same chase, different tools

A great jam and a great DJ set do the same thing: build tension, hold it longer than feels comfortable, then release it all at once. Whether the release is a guitar peak or a bass drop, the room reacts the same way — hands up, strangers hugging, everyone in it together.

The festival field is shared ground

Look at the photos on this site from the Grizzly Main Stage: a DJ under a wall of lasers, a crowd that came for every genre on the bill. Festivals that mix string bands and electronic acts tend to build the most open-minded crowds around. You come for one stage and leave with three new favorites.

Bring the same lot manners

Hydrate, protect your ears, find your friends with a totem and look out for anyone who's having a rough night. The values are the same across every stage: respect the music, respect each other.

So next time someone says EDM doesn't belong at a jam show, invite them to the late-night set. Lasers and love go just fine together.
