Chasing Tour on a Shoestring
The Lot Department · Sep 1, 2026
Carpools, camp stoves and how to see twelve shows in a month.
Following a band from city to city is one of the great American traditions. It doesn't have to drain your bank account. Here's how folks on the lot stretch a dollar across a whole run.
Split everything
Gas, campsites, hotel rooms and groceries all get cheaper when you divide by four. Post in fan groups before tour — there's always somebody headed the same direction looking for a ride. Agree on a gas fund and a music rotation before you leave the driveway.
Cook your own
A camp stove, a cooler and a box of staples will save you more than anything else. Venue food adds up fast. Make a big breakfast, pack sandwiches, and treat yourself to one lot meal a night to support the vendors.
Buy tickets smart
Get on the band's mailing list and buy at face value during the presale. Use the official resale exchanges when plans change, and be careful with strangers online — counterfeit tickets are common. Many shows also offer free entry for volunteers who work a few hours.
Sleep cheap
Campgrounds, state parks and the occasional friend's couch beat hotels every time. If you do grab a room, book a refundable one early and pile in.
Know when to rest
Skip a night if you need to. Drink water, sleep, and eat a vegetable once in a while. The best tour stories come from people who make it to the last show of the run.
Tour isn't about how much you spend. It's about who's in the car with you when the sun comes up on the highway.
